Nurses Needed to Push the Peace Order Bill Across the Finish Line – Urgent!! WE NEED YOUR HELP!
Posted over 4 years ago by Jacqueline Patterson
Greetings-
We have made significant progress on advancing the Maryland Nurses Association’s priority legislation: HB 289/SB 105 – Peace Orders. This legislation protects nurses and colleagues by allowing employers to seek peace orders to protect employees from workplace violence.
We have just three days to get it across the finish line, as the Maryland legislative session ends at midnight on Monday. While both the House and Senate have approved the legislation, the Senate added an amendment regarding liability that will create unintentional problems on the front line. The amendment puts pressure on the employer to file a peace order. We all know that with domestic violence cases, sometimes it is NOT wise to take out the peace order until the victim is in a safe place. Employers need to be able to work with their employees to determine what strategy is best in domestic violence situations.
The bill will be discussed in a conference committee today or tomorrow. Please email all six members of the conference committee members below immediately and ask them to:
“Please move HB 289/SB 105 – Peace Orders without the Senate amendments. The amendments may unintentionally put domestic violence victims at risk by pressuring their employers to file peace orders – even when the victim is not safely removed from their domestic situation."
Nurses need HB 289/SB 105 this year. One in four nurses are assaulted. Workplace violence should not and cannot be a part of the job for nurses.
The conference committee members are:
